In some cases, these apps have taken direct dependencies on fonts that are not present by default on all Windows 10 systems. But some apps may take direct dependencies on particular fonts for displaying certain Unicode characters and do not utilize the font fallback mechanisms provided by Windows. In certain apps, these changes can lead to the “square box” symptoms when displaying certain international text.Īll Windows 10 editions include fonts that provide broad language support, and the Windows platform includes font fallback mechanisms designed to ensure that text in any language always displays with legible glyphs rather than boxes. More details on these changes are provided below. Some fonts that previously were included in every Windows desktop system have been moved into optional font packages, and so may not be present on all Windows 10 desktop systems. Some fonts that were included in Windows Phone 8.1 are not included in Windows 10 Mobile. A side effect of these changes is that a small subset of existing apps created for earlier versions of Windows or Windows Phone may be affected. Some key improvements have been made in Windows 10 that affect fonts more details on this are provided below. On Windows 10 desktop, this issue typically involves text in languages other than the languages for which that system is configured, and within certain types of apps that support scenarios in which international languages may be encountered (e.g., browsing the Web, and user notifications in social networking apps). On Windows 10 Mobile, this issue is most likely to involve East Asian languages (Chinese, Japanese, Korean). This issue typically involves text in Middle East or Asian languages (Arabic, Chinese, Hindi, etc.). In the future, we’d like to expose this functionality so you can set your own preferences. When running certain apps on Windows 10 desktop or Windows 10 Mobile, some characters display as a square or rectangular box, or as a box with a dot, question mark or “x” inside, while the same app running on earlier Windows or Windows Phone versions did not have this problem. Since the property is not yet widely supported in browsers, we won’t be applying our own preferences to the CSS output that we serve at this time. The font-display descriptor has been introduced in drafts of the CSS 4 specification to provide tighter control over when to display a font. Some folks have asked if we have a preference for the font-display CSS property. See our documentation for more info about using our APIs. Since the Early Access release, we’ve added support for our partners using the Typekit Platform API – which means you can now serve Typekit fonts using the CSS embed code for your customers. We’ve gotten a lot of feedback that people are excited to finally use fonts from the Typekit library in their email campaigns, and we’re pleased to support it! It was also great to see LitmusApp added us to their “ Ultimate Guide to Web Fonts in Email” on the tail of our Early Access announcement. When you create a new kit, the CSS embed code is the new default - and you still have the option to choose the advanced JavaScript embed code if you need it, whether for dynamic subsetting or fine-tuned control over font loading behavior. Starting today you’ll see the new CSS embed code in our kit editor, where it’s available as an HTML link tag or CSS statement.Īny existing websites with the default JavaScript embed code will continue to work with no change on your end, but you can change to the CSS embed code if you wish by grabbing it from the kit. With the CSS embed code, you can use web fonts from Typekit in HTML email, Google AMP, and custom stylesheets, and more - places that our previous reliance on JavaScript prevented us from supporting. Today we’re excited to announce that we’ve rolled these capabilities out to all our customers. In August, we launched an Early Access preview for serving web fonts without JavaScript.
